Fall Prevention at Home: Simple Steps to Stay Safe

Falls are one of the most significant health risks facing older adults, with around one in three people over 65 experiencing a fall each year. While falls can have serious consequences — including fractures, head injuries, and a loss of confidence — the good news is that many falls are preventable with the right precautions.

The home environment plays a crucial role in fall prevention. Simple modifications can significantly reduce risk. Ensure all areas of the home are well-lit, particularly stairways, hallways, and bathrooms. Remove or secure loose rugs and mats, clear clutter from walkways, and ensure electrical cables are safely tucked away. In the bathroom, installing grab rails near the toilet and in the shower or bath can provide vital support. Non-slip mats in the shower and bath are also essential.

Physical fitness is equally important. Regular exercise that focuses on strength, balance, and flexibility can significantly reduce fall risk. Activities such as walking, tai chi, and specific balance exercises recommended by a physiotherapist are particularly beneficial. If you use a walking aid, ensure it is the right type and properly adjusted for your height.

Medication review is another important aspect of fall prevention. Some medications, particularly those that affect blood pressure, balance, or alertness, can increase fall risk. Ask your GP or pharmacist to review your medications regularly. Vision and hearing checks are also important, as sensory impairments can affect balance and spatial awareness.
